I'm a first time guinea pig owner, so am hoping to get a bit of advice from experienced owners. I've got 2 boars, 10 months old, that have lived together since being very young. I've had them less than a week. The lady I got them from told me that for whatever reason they hadn't been handled much. They seem fine together, there's a bit of the dominance behaviour that I've read about going on between them, but only occasionally and very light. Mostly they get on very well together and spend most of the time chattering and eating/sleeping in very close proimity. I just wondered if anyone has any advice on how best to introduce a handling 'regime' to them as they're 10 months old and it may be different than when they are still babies. I'm quite confident with animals, so have no problem picking them up, but any advice on how I should approach this would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks!

I think the best approach is little and often! Spend time chatting to them through next to the cage and get them used to you being the veggie lady, then lift them out for floor time and sit in with them giving them gentle strokes and tickles as well as lots of food! Once they are happy with that then try for short periods of lap time.

That is what I did with mine and it meant they had time to get to know me and build up their confidence that I was not going to eat them!

Thanks both for the advice. This morning there was a mini breakthrough.....I was sitting next to the cage stroking Patch and he seemed to be making a contented sound when i was concentrating on a certain area of his back. I've found his soft spot! Pickles, hmmm, may take longer.

Most piggies do take time and do never really love being picked up, even though most are OK being cuddled eventually. Just give your boys time to settle and learn to trust you.
