Just wondered if anyone has experienced similar situation. My 1yo pig eye has been slowing bulging and it was agreed with vets to remove the eye. The eye would not return to the socket and assumption was something was growing behind it. They called me to say an xray found nothing behind the eye so we are back home with pain killers to go back early next week to see how things are going. I'm finding every few days the eye looks a little different. Currently no answers. The pic with the thumb is the latest.20210922_124908.webp20211006_194710.webp20210922_124943.webp

Hi,

One of my piggies has eye issues...he quite often has one bulging eye if he is having a flare up...if there is no growth behind it then the vet will hopefully look for other issues...just keeping it clean I personally keep in Lubrathal and Terramycin incase...and making sure there isn't too much dust in the hay by shaking it out first...maybe keep a log of roughly what your piggy is doing when having a flare up...you may notice similar things setting it off...

Things got worse this morning and he stopped eating I assume due to pain. Pic from the morning but by the afternoon was worse with red streaks. Took him to a different vets costing 3x more. Cant afford 2k for a CT scan so having eye removed and his teeth at the back are not lined up so having dental at the same time if he survives.

I'm so sorry to hear about your piggy's eye. I have no experience but it sounds like you have to do something for his pain and if his teeth are misaligned this must have been affecting him for a while. Either discomfort in one side causing him to chew differently, or I think that sometimes the roots of the teeth can actually press upwards causing eye trouble. Pigs can manage fine with an eye removed. You are right that any op is a big thing but with a bit of luck and some tender nursing your vets are giving him his best chance.

@Wiebke have you anything to offer this poster whose 1 year old piggy has a bulging eye?

They called me to say they found his back teeth have a congenital defect he had from birth. Not sure how the first vets missed it completely. We lost his brother quite early after we got them and the vets said his condition was congenital so a pretty bad batch.
Fell in love with abyssinian Guinea pigs but I will definitely look for a different breeder next time and only purchase after a vet check up as these two have rinced 2k wiith their defects.

He didn't show any signs of discomfort and was eating well even when the eye began bulging. Even surgery my way is back logged due to covid hence finding a different vet altogether to get him seen to quicker.
I dont believe the eye was being pushed by the teeth, I think an infection has just ravaged the whole area.

They have now removed the eye but I have been warned they had to use a lot of anesthesia to keep him under so he was being slow to come round. They did a dental too which will likely have be done throughout his life as he can't due to defects. Which means I might likely loose him on the table to anesthesia each time he needs a trim.

If he makes it home I will capture his new danger mouse look but he has to get through the next 72 hours.

I have a third pig from the same breeder but thankfully a completely different litter and happily chomping on his food despite his mate being missing.

Finger very firmly crossed! That looks really nasty. :(
Longer term dental issues can cause eye problems.

For future reference (because it would not have been in time for this crisis) there is a clinic in Northamptonshire called the Cat and Rabbit clinic who have a vet couple, Simon and Kim Maddock, who are guinea-pig dental specialists. They are raved about all over the forum because they can perform very effective conscious dentals on the back teeth. Some members have travelled cross-country from the south-east or north Wales to have pigs treated there. There is also a lady on here who runs the TEAS sanctuary for special needs piggies - she does boarding for piggies who need treatment or ops with the Maddocks and has great experience with dental piggies. Because these vets see a LOT of guinea pigs they are also very trusted for all sorts of other non-dental problems. It might be worth trying to get your pigs registered here in case you would like appointments in the future. There might be a few weeks wait for a normal appointment but then if you have an emergency you are already on the books.

I really hope your little guy comes through the recovery from his anaesthetic - his youth will be on his side and you obviously care so much for them x

He didnt recover from the anesthetic. He was in an incubator struggling to breathe and we couldn't get him off oxygen so made the decision this evening. Gutted. He made us laugh every time he drank his water bottle as his moustache would jiggle.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I lost a girl to anaesthetic following an op to remove a front tooth. Op went surprisingly smooth and quick but she just couldn't recover and she had a very difficult time and I blamed myself terribly which was no good at all. You made all the right choices for him and he had a year of life being happy and well cared for, it's just an awful ending when they go so young. So sorry x
