We went to the vet today and he has a lot of fluid in his right lung per the xrays. Vet didn't see any evidence for heart issues. He went to the vet because he has been hooting on occassion, coughing, and heavy breathing. He is acting totally normal aside from his breathing issues. We had to get his meds compounded and I expect they'll arrive Monday. I'm worried about him, but considering he's been fine til now I shouldn't be super concerned. Is there anything I could do til then to make him comfortable?

Hi

I would see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage does have a positive/negative impact on his breathing or not and then take it from there. Nebulising can help in some cases but not all (occasinally it can make things worse) so the 'tester' is helpful as a safe pointer. The humidity or dryness of the room can also impact the on breathing.

All the best with the new meds. There is no standard advice. The diuretic is the main medication to help drain and free up the lung again if possible.

Our meds had to be compounded so they won't be here til Tuesday :(

He is still acting normal and being himself. I just really worry for him. I wonder if one of those small humidifiers would be worth a try. I am also providing him extra vitamin C. Another thing to note, he has no discharge or sneezing, just the breathing issues. He does cough sometimes. Looking at him he looks like a perfectly healthy boy aside from his breathing.

Hi

Before you go to the expense of a humidifier try the bowl trick to see whether it actually make a difference or not. You are going to have enough expenses with the medication and do not blindly give in to your urge to 'do something right now' just on spec. ;)

This is clearly not a life or death emergency and your boy will hold for another two days. It very much depends on what is causing the fluid build up in the lung so you cannot blindly follow somebody else's experience - it is certainly not your classic pneumonia since that would be very past progressing.

You have to work out on your own what works in your specific case and what works not without knowing the cause.

Where do your pigs live? I have had a baby with pneumonia and he recovered well but he was on antibiotics asap.

If he seems to be fine and the vet relayed no urgency to it I am sure he will be fine.
I hope your boy recovers well x

He lives inside, in the living room.

Our vet gave us a short duration of meds to hold him over til his actual meds arrived yesterday. She said we could give the humidifer a shot too. We ended up having a brand new one that we forgot about, so we got it set up for him. He's still got his appetite and everything. Hopefully he gets over this illness!
