Is this a good idea?

My two girls are generally ok although I feel Sophie would like more affection in her life. Honey is constantly on alert to every sound and movement and if Sophie tries to groom her she gets very grumpy. Honey rumbles loads in the cage but out of the cage follows Sophie like her shadow. However she rarely seems to relax long enough to let Sophie cuddle up. for me after a year and a bit they just don't seem settled.

I hoped getting a boy (castrated obviously) might make Honey feel safer (someone else on look out) and give Sophie someone to groom and cuddle up to. Sophie loves being made a fuss of and being brushed etc. I hoped it would be more herd like?

I am fully aware that it could go wrong and I may have a lone Guinea Pig who I need to pair up or worse case scenario rehome.. which I really wouldn't want to do.

I have read a few threads on here and am now worried that a trio is a bad idea?

please tell me I am just tired and worrying too much.

I think that it usually works fine and girls usually like neutered boys :) But some girls won't like them. I guess if you contacted a rescue that had a neutered boy, you might be able to bring your girls to visit and see how they get on with him? Or if they have several they can visit them all and see which they like best :)

Use a reputable rescue and you can boar date your girls.

Using a rescue means you would have the rescues back-up, if you choose a rescue from this forum it should give you the full support, backup, advice & reassurance as we totally understand your worries and will boar date your girls for you or with you.
Sow/boar dating is great because within the first 20 minutes of them meeting you should know if they will be ok, and it's normally the sows that makes this decision as to whether she likes her man.
And if they dont get along then it just might be a matter of finding the right combination of personalities to bond.

I also want to put your mind at rest about a trios going wrong. In my opionion a neutered boar/sow pairing are the most stable combination however please be reasured that if anything did go wrong with the friendship then you definatley wouldnt be left with a single piggie or one to re-home.
Speaking as a rescue foster carer I would be horrified if you thought it was left down to you to pick up the pieces of a failed bond! Going to a rescue gives you this security that the rescues have their piggies back (its part of the clause), even if, its a year or 2 down the line, the rescue will always be there to help you and the piggie if for any reason you need to rehome them.

I am looking at putting a male in with my three girls and I am a little aprehensive as to how things will go so I know how you feel about it as I wonder if the status quo will get upset, but then they have only been together for a short time and part of my trio is a youngster who gets picked on a fair bit so I thought the extra member of the gang might help them settle.

I have 2 groups of 1 boar and 2 sows and they get on perfectly. You'll just have to watch that one of them doesn't get left out, but mine all seem to just do there own thing. x

I'm the exception to the rule, in that my trio fell out...but now we have Snickers on her own, there are definite signs of something funny going on with either hormones or the dreaded P word, so I don't think it was something that normally happens, just I have a stroppy female!

All my other male/female pairings are as strong as a house (says looking at Bumble and Pixie asleep both with their heads in either end of the tube, while my group of girls scrap over a piece of hay...lol)

I generally find with Trio's one is almost always left out. I found with my Trio Pebbles was always on her own, so she went boar dating and got herself a man. Although it seems Pebbles just likes her own company very rarely will I see her enjoying the company of any pig.

Give Pebbles a bowl of food, you will see a happy pig!

Patrick on the other hand is devoted to Pebbles, he always sits or sleep beside her if I take Pebbles out he gets very upset wheeking and lookin for her! xx

She sounds like Snickers! Tho she has been very interested in the un-neutered boys staying with me at the moment...tart...

Thank you,

I have agreed to rescue a boy already and will be back with lots of questions once his bits are done and the six weeks are up.

Intros and bonding with my rats was so much easier!

xx

My friend has rats and she said the same! She can't believe the issues guineas have considering they are meant to be social animals, haha!

I have always found bonding easy, but I have only ever had sows.:)
