Hi again,

Does 0.8ml meloxaid twice daily sound ok, to give a PIGGY who is sometimes in the day squeaking whilst peeing or pooping?
A specialist guinea pig get has recommended this but we haven't seen them as they live 3 hours away from us. We have spoken to our vets and they are happy for us to meet this new requirement.

Does anyone have any views on this?

I’m not sure, but will tag some other members. How long has it been going on, and are you able to get him actually seen by a vet? Try the vet locator to see if there’s one nearer you.

He saw a vet on Wednesday and was prescribed Meloxaid. He still has some pain and that's why the specialist vet suggested a higher dosage. Since Thursday he has has Meloxaid once daily at 0.2ml.

Okay. I guess it’s a case of wait and see if it stops.

Hi!

Please have your piggy vet checked for a potential urinary tract infection or cystitis, a stone/sludge or a semen rod stuck in the penis shaft. In the case of an infection he will need an antibiotic. It can take some days for the symptoms to firm up if you are dealing with an infection.

Do not home treat on spec and contact your clinic for advice. Is this the same piggy that has had the gut stasis?
Unless we know whether you have cat or dog metacam (meloxaid is one of the brand names) we cannot comment on the dosage in the first place. Dog metacam is three times stronger than cat metacam; both are prescribed for guinea pigs but could be given to a piggy of your side - one dosage is at the upper and one at the lower end.

Hi all,

My piggy has been on metacam for dogs for over a week and is still in pain sometimes. How long do guinea pigs normally stay on medication? Obviously depends what they have but is there any sort of indication?
Yesterday the pain was frequent and today nothing apart from the last couple of hours. It's been very difficult to find out what is exactly wrong with him as the vets aren't completely sure.

Would anyone recommend keeping him off greens completely for the next two or three days? His poops are healthy size, bit soft and of dark colour.

Hi

Is your guinea pig on antibiotics, too, or just on metacam?

If symptoms don't subside or get worse within a week, then you need to see the vets to check for bladder stones or sludge somewhere in the urinary tract. Normally with UTI or bacterial cystitis that is treated with antibiotics and an analgesic like metacam, acute symptoms subside within about 3 days.

Just metacam does not heal a bacterial infection, doesn't cure an acute stone/sludge problem and also doesn't work on its own with sterile interstitial cystitis (i.e. a non-bacterial recurring bladder infection that is mainly managed but not cured with glucosamine and metacam once all other potential urinary tract problems have been elimated?

Do you have a more piggy savvy vet within your reach?

He's also on emeprid as the vets said his stomach was full of food.

We've been monitoring his poops as well. It's definitely a mixture some squishy, soft and normal.

I will look at those vets in the link. He did have an x-ray and there were no signs of bladder stones.

I would definitely have him checked if things are not normalising in the gut; something is wrong with the digestive process or is impacting on the digestive process.

Could your vet feel for a thickened lower bowel which is a more chronic if fairly rare issue in guinea pigs?

We spoke to the vet today and she said she wasn't too concerned for him to come in. We will carry on the medication till Wednesday and monitor again. If the pain consists then they will see him again.

I'm not sure about the thickened lower bowel, but I will definitely mention that to the vets.
