...and would love to bring them in for floor time, etc. But I do understand about their need for a constant temperature. In the winter, would heatlamps/warming pads work?
Basically, I want to the right thing as a responsible pet owner. I have stupidly got myself excited (and my children)...
I have one pair in the shed built for piggies. We've insulated it and made it so I have one smaller section with heater installed for winters. I have no idea what temperatures are like where you live.
One of my pairs always lived outdoors before I got them and are happier there compared to my...
No, you should have done this as not all animal attractions are bad.
We went to a place in Devon in August and the guinea pigs and rabbits were kept in pairs or groups in huge enclosures full of hay and food. I was rather impressed especially as there was a member of staff manning the section...
...from another practice and is a guinea pig specialist who keeps piggies herself and said she has operated on her own piggies many times. They reassured me about heatlamps and heat pads and insulating blankets. So little bat-hippo is in the best possible hands today, hoping for a good outcome!
Hi!
If in any doubt, have any new piggy vet checked. From your pictures I cannot assess any pain; she doesn't look clearly off and miserable to me anyway.

...piggy. I wish we could explain to them we do what we do for their own good and not just on a whim!
It sounds like Tallulah is in very good hands, my vets have heatlamps to keep animals warm after surgery. I use snuggle safes once they get home, well worth investing in one if you don't have one.
That was me! We had what I think they call a stretchy kitten sock, Bracken was also put under a heat lamp to warm him up, which seem much more sensible than trying to get a sick piggy into a jumper.
Although my pigs are indoors, in my room is seems to get very chilly, think it's where it's at the back of the house and doesn't get any direct sunlight, I have an electric halogen heater in here, it's cheap to run and take the chill off the room rather quickly, as there's nearly always someone...
Hi,
I have a 10.5 x 8.5 ft stable all boarded out and insulated. It has heatlamps, enrichment, toys etc. I currently have it split in 2 with a 6ft hutch in each and a herd of 3 girls and 1 neutered huspig in each side. I want to ask peoples thoughts on taking out the divide and putting all 8...
Quick update since the last post:
Since our other 2 piggies died we added the ladder back into their enclosure. Loki, the one who never went up the ladder again since falling down, now loves to chase eachother up and down. They’ll even wheek at eachother to come up. I put him at the top of the...
Hi guys,
My pigs are kept indoors, however it's getting pretty cold at night/when we're out and the heating not on. I've ordered a head pad, but it's rock solid and they don't like it. Has any one used a heat lamp?
All animals are weather/air pressure sensitive, and we certainly are having our fair share of it at the moment!
My own poor head has been telling me that every single time before the next weather front hits! :(
Piggies definitely don't like windy weather, thunderstorms and gales. Always bring...
This is a good question.
If you can describe their set up in a little more detail we can probably offer better suggestions.
I am also not sure about a heat lamp, but I know someone on here who did have an electric blanket hanging over their hutch (suitably covered and sheltered of course) who...
I would strongly recommend to give your two other piggies an imeraverol bath within a week, too; ideally sooner just as a prevention.
Since you have caught it very early on, it will hopefully not get very far; just any affected spots will have to run their due course.
Thanks Wiebke for the very detailed answer.
So far there are no bald patches on Pufu and the skin is not red/crusty. The only symptoms that i saw were a bit too much hair loss during the health checks and he seemed scratching a bit too often. Actually i went to the vet for a completely...
Hi, I too have the oil filled heater in the shed. I've been told heatlamps are more expensive to run. When we had the -10°C I've locked my piggies inside the hutch and separated the shed with large felt sheet (so the radiator wasn't covered!) To create smaller den. I have wireless weather...
